Do you struggle to consistently pitch the ball in the air?
Do you drive the ball over the green or hit the ground before the ball and leave it a few feet in front of you???
The most common problem I see in pitching is scooping !!!
It is a misconception that you need to help the ball into the air by scooping.
It is crucial to let the loft of the pitching wedge lift the ball for you, in other words hit down and through firmly without breaking the left wrist through impact.
As soon as you try and scoop the ball up it will roll along the ground, usually straight over the back. In other words the more you try and lift the ball in the air the lower the ball will go.
Let the club lift the ball by sweeping straight through and keeping the clubhead LOW after the ball
The entire triangle, across your shoulders and down your arms, needs to move back and forth throughout the shot.
Use the triangle of the shoulders and arms to hit through not your wrists.
Imagine you have a low bench in front of you and you are trying to keep the ball BELOW the bench.
This is the opposite of scooping, the more you try and hit it low the more the loft of the club can work for you and lift the ball.
Leaving your weight on your back foot is another common problem.
If you hit the ground behind the ball when pitching this is most probably why.
Start with your weight on the left foot and LEAVE IT THERE throughout the entire shot on your short chips and pitches, there is no need to transfer your weight back and through on little shots.
Give it a try next time you are practising around the greens.
